Kids Cooking Classes

Junior Chef Academy

75 minutes class/10-week class, for kids ages 6-12. Build basic culinary skills, incorporating nutrition and fun food experiments. Includes chef hat, apron, progress reports and a kid-prepared recipe showcase at the end of the session. 

  • Locations: Andover, Downtown, East, Northwest, and Newton YMCAs
  • Fees: $33/month for 3 months via bankdraft or $99 per session  (financial assistance available), open to members and non-members. Non-member rate $159 per session

Junior Chef Academy LEVEL 2

75 minutes class/10-week class, for kids ages 6-12. Build on culinary skills from level 1 with new weekly recipes. Kids earn a kitchen gadget during each session. (Level 1 recommended but not required, it is more important for a child to get to do a cooking class that works with their schedule regardless of if it is level 1 or 2 first).

Classes for Parents and Adults

Learn to SAVE MONEY AND EAT BETTER with the FREE Cooking Matters for Parents Program

For pregnant women, parents or primary caregivers of young kids from lower–income families.

Families will learn to shop for and cook healthy meals on a budget through hands-on cooking classes called Cooking Matters for Parents.  Free for members and non-members (adults only).  For pregnant women, parents or primary caregivers of young kids from lower–income families. Participants will receive free groceries at each weekly class.  Class meets once a week for 6 weeks and are offered at a variety of community locations and times. Contact Tammi for dates/times/locations and to enroll. Cooking Matters is taught in partnership with K-State Research and Extension, Sedgwick County.

Game-Changing Nutrition for a BETTER You

Don’t let your food choices hold you back from your goals. This series will give you the right tools to get 'back on track', boosting your cooking skills and nutrition know-how, plus learn new meal ideas.  Get hands-on and help make AND taste new ideas in these classes.

There are 3 classes in this series, attend one or all: $20 per class (member rate), $40 per class (non-member). See flyer.

Class 1: Keys to meal planning and prepping to eliminate the "what's for dinner" pressure! Sampling new ideas included!  (note you can attend one or all the classes in this 3-class series)

Location: Downtown YMCA  

Class 2: Fill up not OUT with flavor! Healthy doesn't have to mean tasteless - Get the lowdown on fats , fiber and more while also learning how to boost flavor! Get hands-on and help make and taste new ideas!  (note you can attend one or all the classes in this 3-class series).  Download flyer.

Location: Downtown YMCA 

Class 3: What you see is what you reach for - who is in your driver's seat of your diet? Your mood or the food? Learn how to be the one in control. Sampling new ideas included!  (note you can attend one or all the classes in this 3-class series)  Download flyer.

No-Frills, Keepin' It Real Nutrition: Hands-On Healthy Cooking Classes (Includes take-home groceries)

It is not fancy and gourmet cooking, it’s easy, fast, good nutrition with no frills!  Participants will learn ways to make healthy eating a reality through hands-on cooking and tasting of new recipes. Participants will take home a bag of groceries each night to make one recipe in class at home. 4 90-minute classes in a series, fee $150/series. Space limited to 10 participants. 

Dates: Mondays 3/25, 4/1, 4/8, 4/15 from 6-7:30PM

Location: Downtown YMCA Second Floor Break Room

Individuals with Foodstamps/Vision/EBT card can visit participating, Wichita-area Farmers’ Markets, swipe their Vision card and receive a dollar-for-dollar match on any money spent on local produce (fruits and vegetables) to buy more local produce.
