Brian Wiens, the owner of Brain Sinew, recently stepped into the role of Advisory Board Chair at the Downtown YMCA. For countless individuals, Brian included, the Greater Wichita YMCA and its branches symbolize more than an organization – they represent a monumental life-enriching force that sparks deep emotional connections that last a lifetime.
"Being part of such a distinguished organization that has earned our community's trust through consistent and intentional service is a true honor," Brian said. "The YMCA not only occupies a crucial role in the Wichita area and around the country but also in my heart – I take immense pride in the Y."
Giving back to the community is his highest priority. So when the opportunity presented itself, this Wichita business owner and creative leader had no hesitation at all about becoming a Y volunteer.
"Since childhood, the YMCA has been a cornerstone of my life, starting from my days in youth sports," he said. "I envision every young person, like me, discovering this haven while navigating life's twists and turns. The YMCA is more than a gym; it's a place for those seeking the best version of themselves. Personally, I owe much of who I am today to this institution."
Brian's story is one of many that illustrates how much the Y means to countless households. Since 1885, the Y has been a driver of good in our local community, offering young individuals a nurturing space to cultivate positive and healthy habits that shape their lives.
Brian credits the Y for steering him away from potential pitfalls as a young adult after college. Embracing a regimen of weightlifting wasn't merely about physical fitness, it became a roadmap to discipline and lifelong wellness.
The personal connections he's built through the years have only strengthened his desire to give back.
"Over time, a friendship bloomed with the director at the Downtown Y and it struck me that this beloved place was steered not just by bricks and mortar but by a team of dedicated individuals. Their commitment inspired me to offer assistance, and I joined the board," he said.
Driven by this sense of purpose, Brian plans to do all he can to ensure the Downtown Y and the Greater Wichita YMCA association-as-a-whole thrives.
It's for that very reason he often asks the people he encounters, "have you ever stepped into a YMCA while traveling?" This conversation starter opens the door for Brian to share the widely held opinion that Wichita has undeniably the best facilities in the country. His goal is to help preserve this uniqueness.
"The very place that had shaped my life and perpetuated my healthy habits deserves my support," he said. "It’s been a constant positive force, influencing my life to this day."
