Karen Hager
For Karen Hager, volunteering with the YMCA Camp Branch is deeply personal.
Having been involved with Camp Hiawatha when it was part of the Salvation Army, Karen watched her two sons grow through their camp experiences.
“As a parent, I saw firsthand the growth camp created for my boys, and I wanted to give back so other kids could benefit from the great things camp provides and those same opportunities.” Karen said.
When she was asked to join the newly formed Camp Branch Advisory Board, Karen jumped at the opportunity. She believed every child should have the chance to experience the same sense of belonging, growth and adventure that had meant so much to her family.
Over the past year, Karen has been instrumental in helping establish the foundation of the Camp branch. As its first Advisory Board chair, she has helped create partnerships and relationships throughout the community, advocated for the YMCA Camp Branch, raised funds through the Strong Community Campaign, secured auction items and provided guidance and mentorship to help the branch grow and thrive.
One of Karen’s most meaningful moments as a volunteer came when she was the Camp nominee for the Greater Wichita YMCA’s Volunteer of the Year award. Standing alongside so many individuals who generously give their time and talents reminded her of the incredible impact that can happen when people work together to serve others.
