IN THEIR OWN WORDS

My connection to the YMCA’S Community Development branch began more than 25 years ago when my teenagers participated in the Black Achievers Program. Through that experience, I was invited to serve on the Community Development Advisory Board. What started as supporting my own children quickly became a passion for helping other young people reach their full potential.

I've been blessed to witness the impact of the YMCA for more than 25 years, and I truly believe our community would have a tremendous void without it.

I believe every child deserves the opportunity to succeed, regardless of their background or financial circumstances, and I'm proud to be part of an organization that lives that mission every day.

Some of the YMCA programs closest to my heart include the SPLASH! program, which provides free water safety lessons to second graders who qualify for free or reduced price lunch. Learning to swim isn't just a recreational skill — it can save a child's life. Many of these children would never have the opportunity to take swim lessons without the YMCA.

Another area that has touched my heart is the YMCA's literacy and reading intervention programs. By helping children strengthen their reading abilities early, the YMCA is opening doors to brighter futures and helping prevent the learning loss that can occur during the summer months.

I also believe deeply in our Middle School After School programs. The hours between 3:00-5:00PM can be critical for many young people. Providing tutoring, intramural sports, clubs and positive adult mentors gives students a safe place to learn, grow and stay engaged while their parents are still at work.

The YMCA's Job Prep program for teens is equally inspiring. Teaching interview skills, financial responsibility, CPR certification, workplace etiquette, communication and then providing paid summer work experience with Job Prep business partners in the community gives young people confidence and valuable life skills that prepare them for future success.

Beyond youth programs, I've also been proud to support community outreach efforts like coat drives, food giveaways, Thanksgiving meals for those in need and summer camps that ensure every child has opportunities to learn, grow and belong.

These experiences have changed me by reminding me that small acts of service, multiplied over many years, can make an incredible difference in the lives of others.
