I first came to the YMCA in 2005, right after moving to Wichita. At the time, it was just a place where I’d take a few classes here and there and support my kids in their soccer teams. I never imagined how important it would become in my life.

In 2017, after going through a divorce, I found myself in a very difficult and emotional place. That’s when the Downtown YMCA became my safe space. My sister — now a Zumba instructor — invited me to join her classes, and that small step changed everything.

Those classes became more than just a workout. They were moments of healing, of letting go and of rediscovering joy. Little by little, I started to feel like myself again. I was stronger, more confident, and at peace.

Along the way, I also made some really good friends. They were people who supported me, encouraged me and made every class feel like I belonged. That sense of community made all the difference.

Over time, I began to take care of my body and my mind in ways I never had before. Exercise became my therapy, my outlet, and something I truly enjoyed. What started with Zumba progressed into water weights, HIIT, bootcamp and beyond.

Today, I can honestly say I feel happy with myself. I feel good, and I’m proud to say I look good, too. More than anything, I feel strong inside and out.

The YMCA is not just a gym to me. It’s a community that supported me, lifted me up and helped me become the person I am today. Because of this community, I am healthy, confident and truly happy.
