Steve Clark YMCA staff interviewed Charles Thornhill for this story in early 2026. He passed away on July 12,2026.

Charles Thornhill, aka Professor, doesn’t let anything interfere with his visits to the Steve Clark YMCA on the Wichita State University campus – rain, snow, sleet or shine, he’s there. 

He has a routine. He walks seven laps around the track, but not before eating his breakfast and greeting other members! 

"I'm just so thankful for everyone that stops and talks with me every morning," he said. 

For Charles, the YMCA is more than just a place to walk. Miles away from his own family, Charles built a support system at the YMCA, made up of members and staff who never fail to check in with him on the rare times he misses a visit. 

During a recent illness, for example, staff and members visited him to let him know they missed him and wished him a speedy recovery. 

He makes sure to let everyone he’s around know that he loves them, and there is nothing they can do about it!
