Nourishing the Development of Our Children

Our President and CEO sent a note spotlighting that summer time can mean hungry bellies for little ones.

For the many children who rely on free or reduced-price meals during the school year, summer is a particularly vulnerable time. Statewide almost 48% of school-age children qualify for food assistance during the school year. The number increases to nearly 57% within Sedgwick County. Rather than enjoying all the activities summer offers, these children are often preoccupied worrying about when they will receive another meal.

At the Y, we know children are set up to succeed when they receive daily nutrition. So while school is out for summer, we are helping children reach their full potential by providing free access to healthy snacks and meals. Thanks to a partnership with the Kids Eat Free summer food program by Wichita Public Schools Nutrition Services, the Y can provide free nutritious meals to children at the Downtown and South branches while the school doors are closed. Summer meals are open to ALL children, 18 and younger, with no enrollment and NO cost.

Hannah and Sophia are just a couple of the children who enjoy coming to the Y during the summer for lunch. Not only do they receive a healthy meal, but they also make new friends and learn the importance of sharing.

I would like to thank the staff and volunteers who serve these children, making sure they have access to food so they can focus on enjoying their summer and are energized to excel.
