Some people make an impact through what they do. Others make an impact simply through who they are. Roz Hutchinson does both.

Since becoming involved with the Downtown YMCA in 2022, Roz has become a leader, a volunteer, a mentor and a source of encouragement for so many. After serving on the Downtown YMCA Advisory Board for the past year, she now steps into the role of Chair, continuing her commitment to strengthening our YMCA and the community we serve.

Her extraordinary dedication has earned her the Robert D. Love Downtown YMCA Volunteer of the Year Award three times— 2022, 2024 and 2025.

In 2022, Roz made a life-changing decision. As she says, “I decided to control the things I could.” That one decision became the beginning of an incredible transformation. She has lost 60 pounds, lowered her A1C to an amazing 5.3, gained strength and confidence she never thought possible and discovered a healthier, stronger version of herself.

Her journey began in the pool. Water exercise gave her the confidence to take the first step. Before long, she challenged herself to try land classes, determined to experience every group exercise format the YMCA had to offer. She did exactly that. Muscle Pump, Y-Box, Step, Barre, Pilates, LIFT and beyond, Roz embraced every opportunity to grow.

She laughs as she recalls, “The first time I did Muscle Pump, I thought I was going to die. But I stayed to the end.”

Perhaps the most powerful lesson Roz shares is this: “It’s really about making a commitment to yourself, being very specific about what you’re going to do, and deciding that you deserve that self-care.”
