Wendy Mejia
Five years ago, Wendy Mejia faced one of the biggest challenges of her life, a battle with Stage 3 breast cancer. As a single mom and school counselor at Marshall Middle School, she courageously worked through 8 rounds of chemotherapy, 27 days of radiation and 7 surgeries. Throughout her journey, she continued showing up for her students, who even helped choose her chemotherapy themes, bringing moments of light and connection during a very difficult time.
Wendy credits her co-workers, friends and family for walking alongside her through every step of her fight. The Y community also celebrates this incredible five-year milestone with her as a very loved Downtown YMCA member.
Wendy shares in her own words:
“Coming to Zumba has been so therapeutic in my healing process. Being part of the Zumba family has been a joy I have been attending for over a year now. Thanks cousin Steev for inviting me and getting me to try something new and out of my normal.”
Her words say it all, finding movement, music and community has been part of her healing journey.
