The City of Wichita and Sedgwick County seeking resident experiences and priorities as work begins on developing a regional food plan.

The City of Wichita and Sedgwick County to develop a FOOD SYSTEM MASTER PLAN that is a long-range planning document that lays out our community's vision for its growth while considering food and nutrition in that plan and vision. The Food System Master Plan will align policies such as ordinances, zoning, and incentives to support a robust local food system and:

  • Foster profitable agriculture and food business
  • Support entrepreneurs in agriculture and food
  • Create new jobs and opportunities
  • Increase access to healthy, nutritious foods for all
  • Support skills in gardening and food preparation
  • Protect soil, water, and air quality
  • Reduce food waste
  • Celebrate diversity of food and agriculture in our community
  • Empower all to participate in the food system.

Our own Tammi Krier, who leads our nutrition programs and food initiatives and represents us on the Health & Wellness Coalition of Wichita, is one of fifteen members of the Master Food Plan steering committee.

The Greater Wichita YMCA has played a major role in the development and work of the Health & Wellness Coalition of Wichita over the last 15 years including shared staff and resources. The coalition's goal is to create a community that encourages physical activity and healthy eating.

The Master Food Plan steering committee is working directly with representatives of the City of Wichita, Sedgwick County, and other groups to develop the full plan.

While the plan's development started in late-2019 and will not be finalized until late-2020 the current phase of plan development includes gathering community opinions, experiences, preferences, and priorities.

To share experiences and priorities for food in our community - please take a brief survey on the City of Wichita's website.
