Saura Hernandez
Saura’s journey in the water is one that truly captures the heart of what the YMCA is all about: Building confidence, overcoming fears and celebrating every small victory along the way.
At the beginning, the water was not a place of joy for Saura. After not one, but two frightening experiences where she almost drowned, she completely gave up on the water. Fear took over, and for a long time, even being near the pool felt overwhelming. The idea of going underwater was simply not an option.
With courage, patience, and so much heart, she began taking small, brave steps starting with just getting her feet wet. Those small steps slowly turned into moments of trust, and those moments turned into progress.
Through swim lessons at the Downtown YMCA, Saura has learned essential skills like body position, control, forward movement and rotary breathing. They are the very things that once felt impossible. She has gone from being afraid to even put her face in the water to now moving through it with growing confidence and strength. The transformation has been incredible to witness.
Now, she wakes up excited, asking every single day, “Am I going to swim lessons today?” At the end of each class, she proudly shows off her new skills to her mom.
For her mom, this journey has been deeply emotional. Watching Saura overcome such a strong fear has brought not only relief, but so much hope. Because of what Saura has learned, her mom now feels confident and excited to plan a family vacation somewhere with water, which is something that once felt impossible.
