Training at the Downtown YMCA with Breezy has helped me tremendously with my career. I am a self-employed painter and often have to place my body in awkward and demanding positions to complete my work. Focusing on dynamic stretching, core strength and HIIT training has given me the ability to hold these positions with more control, and the endurance to push through the physical nature of my job.

Training at the YMCA has made my life better in the most unexpected ways.

I started training with Breezy in the fall of 2023. Shortly after we began, I experienced an unforeseen injury outside of training — a rupture of my quadriceps tendon. I had surgery in January 2024, and after two months of rehab, I knew exactly where I needed to go for my return.

My first session back, I couldn’t even go from sitting to standing without assistance. But with consistent training and support 26 weeks post-surgery, I climbed the Y staircase for the first time. It was an emotional moment.

Fast forward to fall of 2024 — Breezy and I celebrated my recovery by enrolling in the Prairie Fire 5K, where I placed 2nd in my age group. Talk about unexpected!

Originally, I came to Breezy wanting to improve my mile time. I had no idea how much I needed beyond running to support my goals. Mobility and strength training weren’t even on my radar, nor did I understand how important they were for longevity and performance.

Now I do.

Because of consistent training, accountability and the support of my trainer and the YMCA community, I feel more capable and functional at 61 than I ever thought possible.

Not only has my approach to fitness evolved, but my outlook on life has completely shifted. I now have an unshakable belief in my body’s abilities, the power of positive thinking and the importance of consistent action.

Life is really good today. You get what you put in—and I’m all in.

Thank you, Breezy, for your guidance, patience and belief in me every step of the way. And thank you, YMCA.
