Emily Cook wasn’t sure what her future career path would be, but she knew she wanted meaningful work and a chance to grow. She enjoyed working with children, but hadn’t considered that child care could become a long-term career, especially since she didn’t have prior experience or formal education in the field. Still, she decided to take a chance and apply for a job with one of the Greater Wichita YMCA Early Learning Centers.

During her interview, Emily received information about the YMCA’s Work to Learn Program. Designed to remove barriers to becoming an early childhood educator, the program gave her the education, hands-on experience and support needed to earn her Child Care Certificate while working. Even while getting married and welcoming her first child, Emily stayed committed.

Within a year, Emily went from having no child care experience to becoming a Lead Toddler Teacher. More importantly, she found a clear and fulfilling career path. Today, she’s continuing her journey toward an associate degree — confident in her future and passionate about her work.
