My connection with the YMCA began more than 25 years ago through my work at INTRUST Bank, where I served as a loan officer in the Affordable Lending Program. What started as an opportunity to mentor young people soon became a lifelong calling. In 1999, I became involved with the YMCA’s Black Achievers Program, now known as the Job Prep Program, and it has been one of the greatest privileges of my life.

My connection to the YMCA extended beyond volunteering. I watched my own grandchildren, nieces, nephews and children throughout our community participate in swim lessons, dance classes and gymnastics. Through my work at INTRUST Bank, I also supported the YMCA’s Strong Community Campaign, which strengthened my belief that every child deserves the opportunity to learn, grow and succeed.

When I was invited to serve on the YMCA Community Development Advisory Board, saying yes was an easy decision. I wanted to expand my ability to serve the community and help create opportunities that would have a lasting impact on young lives. Since joining the board in 1999, I have never looked back.

What keeps me committed year after year is witnessing the life-changing work of the YMCA. Many people think the YMCA is simply a gym, but it is so much more. It is a place where people from every walk of life find hope, belonging, encouragement and opportunity. Its mission of putting Christian principles into practice by building a healthy spirit, mind, and body for all is something I have seen lived out every day.

The Job Prep Program will always hold a special place in my heart. I watched it grow from serving just 12 students to impacting more than 300 young people. Every child represents a future waiting to be shaped, and I firmly believe that investing in our youth is one of the greatest investments we can make in our communities.

Serving through the YMCA has transformed me. It has humbled me, deepened my compassion and strengthened my commitment to serving others. It has taught me that when caring people come together with a shared purpose, we can truly change lives. No one accomplishes that work alone, but together we can leave a legacy that lasts for generations.

If there is one thing I hope people know about me, it is that I genuinely care about my community. I have heartfelt compassion for people regardless of where they come from or what circumstances they face.
