Harry Byers

At the YMCA, we often say our members become family. Every so often, we get a moment that truly shows what that means.

Harry Byers has been a longtime member of the El Dorado Y community, showing up over the years not just as a participant, but as someone deeply connected to those around him. 

Recently, Harry was given the incredible honor of participating in an Honor Flight in recognition of his service to our country. It was a meaningful milestone on its own, but what happened around it is what made this moment unforgettable.

In the days leading up to his trip, something special began to take shape. His trainer and close friend, Julie, quietly organized a surprise with help from staff across the Greater Wichita YMCA association. 

Kids from YMCA youth programs colored pictures and wrote notes. Members and staff added messages of gratitude and encouragement. What came together was more than a send-off. It was a reflection of the love and appreciation of the entire Y community.

And the story didn’t end there.

When Harry returned home from his Honor Flight, he was met once again by familiar faces — Julie and her daughter Tori, one of our Kid Zone staff members — waiting to welcome him back with open arms. 

We are grateful for Harry, for his service and for the opportunity to witness a community that comes together so fully and so genuinely.
